"To the lover of wilderness, Alaska
is one of the most wonderful countries in the world."

John Muir

The Northern portion of the Inside Passage through Alaska
extends 500 miles from north to south and
100 miles from east to west.

The area encompasses 1,000 islands, 15,000 miles of shoreline
and thousands of coves and bays.

British Columbia's southern portion of the route is of similar
extent with up to 25,000 miles of coastline, including the narrow,
protected Strait of Georgia (between Vancouver Island and the
B.C. mainland), the Johnstone and Queen Charlotte Straits (between Vancouver Island and
the mainland), as well as the wider and more exposed Hecate Strait near the Queen Charlotte Islands.

Shaped by the staggering force of massive glaciers millions of years ago, Alaska's Inside Passage
boasts wildlife-filled fjords and lush island scenery, with mountains carpeted by majestic forests.

The great fjords of the British Columbia Coast rival those of Norway in length and depth,
but have even higher mountain scenery with a more alpine flavour.

Cruising these waters with the Arctic Traveller
offers the chance to see creatures you've only dreamed about

Wildlife sightings occur daily.

Watch and listen as Humpback whales feed on herring in a cooperative
feeding behavior called "Bubble net" feeding.  Observe Orcas (Killer whales) travelling in a tightly knit family group while searching for their next meal.

See Steller Sea lions lounging along the shoreline, or watch for bears turning over rocks
in search of tasty morsels at low tide.  The Seals are plentiful since they travel to the head of
Tracy Arm every year to have their pups on the floating ice, safe from nearby hunting Killer whales.

Seeing Harbor seals and their newborn pups resting on icebergs
is an image that you will never forget

Hear the screech of a Bald Eagle as she awaits her mate's return with another meal for their rapidly growing chicks.  Look for goats grazing on impossibly steep cliffsides.

One does not truly know Alaska and the Inside Passage unless one knows her people

Alaska is home to Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian Indians whose history is reflected in towering totem poles.  Many of our tours include an opportunity to meet and enjoy the land's First People.  You can visit Art Galleries, Museums, Totem Pole Parks, or just wander around one of the villages that you pass by on your travels.  The fierce art and dramatic colors favored by the northern people reflect their resilience in a land where harsh weather and powerful predators such as bears and Orca whales dominate the landscape.  We are proud to call this great land our home, and we deeply respect the heritage of all of her people.

Larger towns afford the chance to explore even more of Alaska's diverse cultures - including totem carving, Native dancing, the blanket toss, traditional music, crafts and festivals as well as cultural and historical museums, heritage centers, academic and artistic attractions like music festivals, local artisan handiwork, Russian iconography and museum exhibits.

The fishery of the Pacific Northwest Coast is legendary, especially for its many salmon runs and the cultures that built on top of them throughout the region.  Local fish include Halibut, Hake, Haddock, Cod and Herring, as well as Sea Urchin, Crab and various other shellfish.

Alaska is the premier destination for adventure and ecotourists seeking a personal connection with nature, wilderness and the local people.

Cruising aboard the Arctic Traveller, you and your companions are sure to experience the adventure of your lives!
